Best State Parks Near Indianapolis for Easy Day Trips

Apr 7, 2026 · 6 min read

One of the underrated perks of living in central Indiana is how quickly you can trade city streets for forest trails. Whether you want a quick after-work hike or a full weekend escape, here are the best parks within easy reach of Indianapolis — perfect for new residents getting to know the area.

Eagle Creek Park (In the City)

You don’t even have to leave Indianapolis for a real nature fix. Eagle Creek Park spans roughly 3,900 acres of land and 1,400 acres of water on the northwest side — one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Expect roughly 30 miles of trails, a swimming beach, a marina, and two nature centers, all minutes from downtown.

Brown County State Park (About an Hour South)

Often called the “Little Smokies,” Brown County State Park is Indiana’s largest state park and a fall-foliage legend, with ridgeline vistas, miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, and the charming town of Nashville nearby. You can find current hours, maps, and entry details through the Indiana DNR State Parks system.

Turkey Run & Shades (West of the City)

For dramatic sandstone canyons and ladder trails along creek beds, Turkey Run State Park and neighboring Shades State Park — both listed in the Indiana DNR directory — are about 90 minutes northwest and well worth the drive for more adventurous hikers.
